Nomads heard a loud whistle and saw a 1215.5 g stone fall 200 from their tent. The stone was broken into many pieces ( sacrified on an altar) 15 days later during a wedding ceremony. Mineralogy and classification ( A. Sexton, OU): olivine Fa30.0; pyroxene, Fs22.0; shock stage, S2; weathering grade, W0/1. Specimen:18.6g OU; main mass with anonymous finder. an unpleasant prospection in mine fields in Western Sahara, we went up
North in the Moroccan Altlas and heard of the story of a stone that fell
in 1986. After a 3 weeks investigation Michel FRANCO was able to recover the fragments of the broken meteorite! See the original story of this hunt in Meteorite! Magazine Aug 2000. Oued el Hadjar meteorite is extremely fresh, well preserved by dry field conditions, it is a beautiful meteorite. The matrix is white with many black heat altered type 6 chondrules, when I picked it up from the ground I imediatly recognized it as a rare meteorite, I even thought it could be an aubrite ! Its well preseved crusts, finely cracked attest of its fast cooling. A meteorite with a small TKW, certainly a must for the discerning collector! |
